POWER (Path of Wellness, Empowerment, & Recovery): Healing from Technology-Assisted Child Sexual Abuse (TACSA) – Marie Collins Foundation - Stay Safe Partnership

Outcomes

The Marie Collins Foundation (MCF) is a specialist charity that works to improve the outcomes for victims and survivors of Technology-Assisted Child Sexual Abuse (TACSA). It aims to help practitioners who work with children who have been sexually harmed to aid their recovery. The resource is trauma-focused with an emphasis on doing no further harm to any child who has been groomed online, had intimate images shared or taken, had a fake sexual image made of them, or been sexually harmed or abused through any other use of the internet or technology.

Service Description

This free resource is accessible, age relevant, trauma focused, and ultimately one that does no further harm to the child. It is not a replacement for therapy or counselling.

There are two resources, one aimed at young people aged 13 to 16 (available online) and another aimed at 9 to 12 (coming soon online).

Practitioners using this resource must be mindful that children develop at different rates, so it is important to take into consideration their capacity to understand and not just their chronological age.

The resource has been designed as a minimum of 8 sessions, which includes a getting to know you session followed by 3 mandatory foundation sessions, then the practitioner and young person can select from a range of targeted sessions before ending their time together with the mandatory closing session. Within each session there may be additional resources to access. However, the resource is not limited to 8 sessions, further sessions can be facilitated should the practitioner and young person choose.

The resource is comprised of 4 stages, with clear session overviews and contact with the young person and family being made prior to the resource being used. More information can be found by clicking on the link below. The success of this resources relies on the connection between the practitioner and the young person. It has been written in a way that builds rapport, which promotes connection, something that is vital to recovery.

Benefits
  • it allows the exploration of thoughts and feelings on the journey to recovery
  • POWER has been produced by professionals who have years of experience working with trauma and in collaboration with those with lived experience. It will enable practitioners who work directly with children and young people to focus on the child’s individual recovery needs

We know that often children who have been harmed through TACSA have had elements of control taken from them and have had little choice in what has happened to them. Using this resource can help empower the child or young person to take back choice and control and rebuild their self-esteem.
