Shore - a safe space for teenagers worried about sexual behaviour - Stay Safe Partnership

Outcomes

Shore aims to:

  • prevent harmful sexual behaviours among young people
  • provide a safe and anonymous place for them to access help and support
Service Description

The service is for anyone who:

  • has questions about healthy sexual relationships
  • wants to change their own behaviour
  • is looking for reliable information to help them respond to someone else’s behaviour

Shore understands that being online is important for children and young people and that it’s also important to feel in control of what happens in the digital world. Being online can be confusing, and people can encounter conflicting advice and information on sexual relationships through:

  • pornography
  • social media
  • other online sources

The website offers upfront and clear information on sex and the law to make sure young people:

  • are well informed
  • feel supported
  • know where they can go for help if they have any concerns or questions

Shore’s topic library and 'What to do if…' pages offer young people a wealth of information and advice covering various aspects of sex and relationships. It aims to prevent harm from happening to themselves or others. It also signposts young people to additional relevant support services.

Shore’s topic library content includes:

  • building a good life
  • enthusiastic consent
  • sex and the law
  • dealing with regrets about harmful sexual behaviour
  • managing difficult emotions
  • safe spaces to learn about sex
  • pornography
  • online sexual behaviour
  • harmful sexual behaviour

Shore also offers an anonymous email service, which provides a confidential and safe space to help young people:

  • learn about a range of topics, at their own pace
  • get answers to questions that they might not feel comfortable asking friends, family or teachers

In addition, their online chat service is accessible during Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Availability

Information and advice is accessible via the Shore website 24/7.

For individual support, the Shore team aim to respond to all messages via their email support service within five working days.

The online chat service is available:

  • between 5pm and 8pm on Monday and Tuesday evenings
  • between 5pm and 9pm on Wednesday evenings

Young people are informed that there is no requirement to give personal details prior to using the email service. If a disclosure is made regarding a safeguarding issue, and personal details have been provided by choice, this information will need to be shared with relevant authorities. This includes the police, to ensure young people are safeguarded.
