Talk Relationships (NSPCC) – delivering sex and relationships education - Stay Safe Partnership

Outcomes

Talk Relationships is a new service from the NSPCC. It ensures that secondary school-aged children and young people can learn about sex and relationships in a safe education environment that:

  • fosters healthy relationships
  • recognises, responds to, and prevents abuse

Talk Relationships offers:

  • a whole-school approach framework to help school leaders create a safe education environment that promotes healthy relationships 
  • a series of lesson plans (for students 11 to 16) created by sex and relationships education experts from the PSHE Association and NSPCC
  • eLearning courses to help secondary school teachers and leaders feel more confident and knowledgeable when:
    • delivering sex and relationships education
    • responding to abusive behaviours
    • taking a whole-school approach to sex and relationships education 
  • a dedicated helpline to provide advice and guidance to people working in secondary education to address any issues they may have in delivering sex and relationships education
Service Description

Whole-school approach framework 

Developed in partnership with Life Lessons, the framework consists of five documents to help school leaders implement a whole-school approach to sex and relationships education and includes: 

  • the evidence base for a whole-school approach
  • an implementation guide with step-by-step advice
  • the framework to a whole-school approach, comprising of eight components, each with benchmarks and examples
  • a snapshot tool for self-assessing sex and relationships provision
  • an editable action plan template

Lesson plans

Working with the PSHE association, they have developed a series of age and stage-appropriate lesson plans and accompanying guidance for teaching young people aged 11 to 16 about sex and relationships. Each lesson builds knowledge, understanding and skills on how to negotiate relationships in healthy and safe ways. 

There are 14 lessons available, in addition to a series of six lesson plans for children with additional or special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Sex and relationships education staff eLearning

Talk Relationships offers CPD-certified elearning courses to support secondary school teachers and leaders to deliver inclusive sex and relationships education.

The teachers' course will help improve teaching staff's confidence in delivering these messages and lessons. The school leaders' course supports leadership teams to take a whole school approach to sex and relationships education. 

Helpline

People working in secondary education can contact NSPCC dedicated Talk Relationships helpline for advice on:

  • how to respond to questions or concerns from students, parents or carers
  • preparing a response to questions you think you may be asked
  • managing a safeguarding concern or disclosure
  • managing anxieties about delivering sex and relationships education

  • Monday to Friday, 8am to 10pm
  • Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 6pm

Cost

Free elements. 

The whole-school approach framework can be downloaded for free by completing a short registration form. The lesson plans are free to download, and the advice helpline is free to access. 

The eLearning courses are currently accessible at a cost of £9.50 per delegate.
