Waste not, want not

We’re thinking differently about our rubbish in Lincolnshire to keep perfectly good items from going to waste; as the saying goes ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’.

While it’s important we recycle what we can, reducing the amount of waste we produce and reusing items as many times as possible is even more environmentally friendly. At Tattershall Household Waste Recycling Centre, our Reuse Shop is helping us do exactly that.

Pre-loved furniture, tools, bikes, electronics and more are brought to the site every day. And rather than these items going to be recycled or disposed of, we’re putting them up for sale in the shop at unbeatable prices.

The money made from the sale of items in the Reuse Shop just goes to funding the service, so it’s completely cost neutral to taxpayers, and even saves money in disposal fees.

The Tattershall Reuse Shop is open from 10am to 3pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at Tattershall Household Waste Recycling Centre on Kirkby Lane, Tattershall Thorpe.

At this one small shop alone, more than 11 tonnes of items have been saved from disposal since the shop opened in September last year. We’re already looking at how the success of our Tattershall Reuse Shop could be repeated elsewhere.

A free lick of paint in Grantham and Louth

Another project helping us keep usable items from going to waste is the Community RePaint scheme.

Currently operating at Grantham and Louth Household Waste Recycling Centres, when leftover paint is dropped off at those sites, it is added to the Community RePaint store. Other residents and community groups can then take any paint they might need from the store for free.

If you’re looking to take advantage of the Community RePaint scheme – either by dropping paints off or taking them away – simply speak to a member of staff at the recycling centres in Grantham or Louth.

In the short time the scheme has been operating, already 1,000 litres of paint have been taken away and saved from going to waste.

Community RePaint is a UK-wide paint reuse network, sponsored by Dulux. We plan to open more at other household waste recycling centres in the county in 2025.
