Award winners are recognised for hard work and dedication.
Brian Ward, Selina Wong, Vickie Jenkins and Niamh Jennings have been named as Greater Lincolnshire's Learners of the Year. They’ve all been supported to grow their skills and confidence and are living proof how continuing a learning journey can be incredibly rewarding.
Cllr Patricia Bradwell, executive councillor for adult learning, said: “Congratulations to our winners, and to all of those who have taken the first steps back into education as adults. It can be a challenge, but also as our winners show – lifechanging!”

Brian Ward
Brian had been unemployed for 10 years due to poor mental health. Despite job offers he struggled to gain employment and was beginning to give up his search. He attended the Security Industry Authority course online and in-person with Train 4, which included personal and social development.
Since getting his SIA licence, Brian is now working for RAW training & security. Brian said: “Doing this course and getting this job has really changed my outlook on life, helped me to grow as a person and boosted my confidence.”
Selina Wong
Selina needed to improve her English to help set up her own business. She had a good working knowledge of English but needed a more advanced level of grammar. Selina attended the 10-week English as a second language higher level course with Lincoln City Foundation. She always completed tasks to the highest standard even though she was a single parent, living in a new country and setting up her business.
Her enhanced language skills have given her the boost she needed and Selina is now also the proud proprietor of a second business – the Bubble Kiss company selling bubble tea in Lincoln.
Vickie Jenkins
Vickie gained a Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Business and Administration through First College. After years of working part-time in a supermarket, Vickie decided she wanted a career change. This took an enormous amount of courage as she wasn’t sure if she could pass the course. Not only did she succeed, but thanks to her qualification she had the confidence to successfully apply for an apprenticeship with East Lindsey District Council.
Niamh Jennings
Niamh has been encouraged with her learning journey by Inspire U who support those with specific needs to develop skills and experience. With hard work and commitment, Niamh completed her first work placement at Canwick Court Care Home supporting the chef with preparing and serving food. This was followed by a work placement at The Quad Café in Lincoln where she became proficient in food preparation. In July 2023, she successfully applied for a post as a kitchen assistant and is now working towards gaining a level 2 in English and Level 1 in Maths.
