Less than a month of improvement works left to Newland.
Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "Our improvement works on Newland are less than a month away from coming to an end, sooner than we originally thought they would. As a result, we now expect to have this piece of work finished by early August.
“This fortunate change is down to a number of factors swinging in our favour. For example, some of the risks we originally planned for – like wet weather and finding unexpected utilities – haven’t come to fruition. Plus, we’ve worked incredibly hard with our contractor Winvic and their local surfacing sub-contractor to streamline their works programme and take advantage of all potential efficiencies.”
The current one-way system on Newland will be lifted by the morning of Monday 5 August.
Please note that a series of night-time full road closures on Newland and connecting roads are now underway and scheduled as follows, 7pm to 6am (localised signed diversion routes will be in place for each closure):
- w/c 8th July for four nights – Orchard Street’s junction with Newland
- w/c 15th July for four nights – Lucy Tower Street’s junction with Newland
- w/c 22nd July for five nights – Lucy Tower junction closed for three nights and Wigford Way junction closed for two nights
- w/c 29th July for seven nights (weekday evenings only) – Newland and Orchard Street closed from Lucy Tower Street
Please note that these dates and times are subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances on-site.
Egress from Lucy Tower Street during the night-time closures will be possible via Brayford Wharf North.
Additional works at Carholme Road
Cllr Davies added: “With our works at Newland ending early, we’re going to take the opportunity to carry out £500,000 of additional improvements to the eastern end of Carholme Road using our Newland contractor, Winvic. These will start during w/c 29th July and last for a month. These will include replacing the drainage, footways and road surfacing between its Brayford Way junction to Nelson Street.
“Doing this work now will reduce the amount of disruption in 2025 when we carry out similar improvements to the rest of Carholme Road, from Nelson Street up to golf course’s access.
“With that said, all of our road works in the Newland and Carholme area will be complete by the end of August, meaning any and all traffic management will be fully removed well before the original completion date.
“There will be some initial disruption as people get used to the new set-up – but like before, we expect this to ease quite quickly. And as always, we’ll do our best to carry these works out as efficiently as possible with as little disruption as possible.”
This additional section of works will be carried out under a combination of three weeks suspended parking bays and narrowed lanes, along with two weeks of night-time road closures.
The diversion route for the night closures will be via the A46 / Riseholme Road roundabout / Yarborough Crescent / The Avenue, and vice versa.
Cllr Neil Murray, county councillor for Carholme, said: “I’m very pleased that the improvements taking place along Newland will be finished sooner than expected. Although people seem to have gotten used to the works and there is less traffic than when they started, having the road completely free of barriers and cones will be hugely refreshing.
“It’s also great that our highways team is making a start on some much-needed improvements on Carholme Road. These works have been on the table for quite a while, so I think people will be very happy that they’re finally starting to come to fruition – even though there will be some disruption while they’re underway.”
