Major improvements to pedestrian connectivity on Hawthorn Road planned

The project will see a new section of foot/cycleway built and a current section reconstructed.

UPDATE

The whole Hawthorn Road improvement project is now expected to be complete by the end of w/c 23 September (subject to suitable weather).

Karen Cassar, assistant director for highways, said: “The entrance to Cherry Paddocks often gets flooded during heavy rainfall so, as part of our pedestrian connectivity improvements to Hawthorn Road, we’re taking the opportunity to also improve the area’s drainage as well.

“This will involve replacing a drainage run that connects into the southside culvert, as well as installing new gullies and connections into that new drainage pipe and other existing drainage pipes to help take away the surface water.

“These works will cause some minor disruption, but carrying them out now means we can get these improvements done while we already have a contractor on-site. In the meantime, I want to encourage people to leave extra time for their journeys and also want to thank everyone for their continued patience.”

UPDATE

Please note that the improvement works on Hawthorn Road have been extended until the end of September so that essential drainage improvements can be carried out for the area.

These additional works will be carried out under a road closure, with access maintained at all times. The diversion route will remain as previous, via Kennel Lane / A158 / Lincoln Eastern Bypass, and vice versa.

Major improvements to pedestrian connectivity on Hawthorn Road planned - 27/06/2024

Karen Cassar, assistant director for highways, said: “Starting next month, we’ll be improving the pedestrian and cycle link on Hawthorn Road between the Lincoln Eastern Bypass and Little Cherry.

“Not only will we be rebuilding the failing section of footway between Cherry Paddocks and Hawthorn Avenue, but we’re also building a completely new nearly half-mile section of foot/cycleway between Lincoln Eastern Bypass and Cherry Paddocks.

“And, as part of the works, we’ll also be upsizing the old culvert here to help with removing standing water in the area.”

Dates and timeframes

Monday 22 July for up to six weeks

Location of works

Southern side: Hawthorn Road, between the Lincoln Eastern Bypass and Cherry Paddocks

Northern side: Hawthorn Road, opposite Cherry Paddocks and Hawthorn Avenue

Traffic management

24/7 road closure on Hawthorn Road

Diversion route

Via Kennel Lane / A158 / Lincoln Eastern Bypass, and vice versa

Karen Cassar added: “To safely carry out this work, we’ll need to fully close Hawthorn Road for six weeks. This will no doubt be disruptive, but we’ve planned these works for during the summer holidays to help minimise the impacts of the closure and will be doing everything we can to get the project finished as quickly and efficiently as possible.

“In the meantime, we encourage people to leave extra time for the journeys once the project starts on Monday 22 July.”
