Consistent issues with natural spring leaks affecting properties on Hillside Avenue in Lincoln will be investigated as part of Project Groundwater Greater Lincolnshire.
Project Groundwater is a government-funded project aimed at better understanding groundwater across greater Lincolnshire, and how it can be managed, both in terms of flood risk and as a resource.
At Hillside Avenue, residents have had issues with groundwater in the area for a number of years. Issues which appear to have gotten worse in spring 2023.
Over the coming months, the Project Groundwater team will carry out an in-depth review of the situation at Hillside Avenue, and collate existing reports and geological data from the area. A hydrologist will then visit the street and will be looking to speak to affected residents, and visit the nearby hospital site, slightly uphill from the road.
Once completed, the report will include options and recommendations for work that could help alleviate the groundwater problems here, and the council will look at the next steps it can take, working with other local partners.
Cllr Colin Davie, executive councillor for environment at Lincolnshire County Council, said:
“For a long time, it has been unclear what the source of the water is at Hillside Avenue, and who is responsible for addressing the issue. Now, with the situation apparently deteriorating, and government-funding allowing us to launch our own dedicated groundwater project, we’re keen to get to the bottom of the issue for the residents of the area.
“As well as finding next steps to tackle the groundwater issues in the Hillside Avenue area, the learning from this review could also help us better understand groundwater overall and address other potential similar issues elsewhere in the county.”
