Helping young people understand more about the careers available on their doorstep.
These days there are lots of different choices for young people when they leave school at 16 or older, and going to college or university full time isn’t the only option.
The council is working with the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to link up schools and young people with local employers. By finding out about jobs and careers available in their area, young people gain valuable experience and inspiration about what they could do in the future.
Teachers are also being offered tours with employers too, including a visit by school headteachers to Tong Engineering in Spilsby, and to Micronclean in Skegness, where business owners shared information about the range of job roles available.
Becoming an apprentice offers the chance to get a paid job while learning a skill. There are hundreds of opportunities to apply for an apprenticeship job every week and those who are already apprentices are getting fantastic experiences.
Teaching assistant, chef, accountant, engineer, hairdresser, administrator, dental nurse, welder - these are just a few of the options. Or what about a cyberspace specialist apprenticeship with the RAF? Positions are available now.
Cllr Mrs Patricia Bradwell, executive councillor for adult learning at the county council, said: “It’s really important that we recognise the talent of our young people and encourage them to pursue a fulfilling career within Lincolnshire.
“It can be difficult to know which path to take, so the opportunity to see real jobs with real employers is absolutely invaluable.”
Apprentices earn a wage and get holiday pay like any other member of staff. They work alongside experienced people so they can learn new skills. They get time away from work, usually each week, to do additional training or to study. Plus, apprentices can now also get a student discount NUS card offering many of the same deals and discounts that university students get.
And apprenticeships aren’t just for young people. Did you know you can become an apprentice at any age from 16 years old upwards? Last year over 7000 people across Lincolnshire started an apprenticeship.
