Road reconstruction works to the B1191 in Martin Dales will start in late July.

25/10/2023 - Update: Church Road fully closed due to unexpected issue

Please be aware that Church Road, between Kirkstead Bridge and Martin South Drove, will be closed until the morning of Monday 30 October due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the ongoing carriageway improvements (subject to suitable weather).

The diversion route is via the B1189 to Billinghay / A153 to Tattershall / B1192 to Woodhall Spa, and vice versa.

21/10/2023 - Update: Wet weather creates further changes to work programme

Due to the ongoing and forecasted heavy rainfall and stormy weather this week and next week, the following additional changes to the phasing for the ongoing reconstruction works on the B1191 in Martin Dales will be in place:

  • Night-time road closure between Kirkstead Bridge and New Road (8pm to 5am) in place until Friday 10 November
  • Full 24/7 road closure in place from New Road to Martin North Drove junction until Friday 17 November

Sam Edwards, head of highways infrastructure, said: “The final set of works for this project are highly reliant on dry weather since a wet environment could affect the quality of the final layers of road surfacing and new road markings we’ll be laying.

“As a result, we’ve had to change some of the dates and traffic management for this scheme. We’ll now be finishing in mid-November, subject to suitable weather after next week.

“We’ll continue doing everything we can to finish these works as soon as possible. In the meantime, I want to thank everyone for their patience and remind people to leave extra time for their journeys.”

17/07/2023 - Mid-summer improvements set for B1191 in Martin Dales

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: “This is a massive resurfacing project that will see nearly two miles of the B1191 fully rebuilt near Martin and Martin Dales.

“As part of the works, we’ll be completely rebuilding the carriageway here, including flattening out all of the bumps and unevenness that have appeared over time.

“This won’t be a small task. In fact, we’ll be laying 17,250 square metres of underground steel reinforcement grid and using 38,000 tonnes of tarmac and other road-building materials to rebuild this section of the B1191.”

Cllr Robert Kendrick, Metheringham Rural county councillor, said: “This section of road is in dire need of repair, so I’m very happy to say that work to improve its state is imminent.

“There will, no doubt, be some disruption while the roadworks are underway. However, this is a necessary part of all highways improvements, so I ask everyone affected to remain patient and bear with us.

“Once complete, the road will be as good as new.”

Additional information

Please note that the B5 bus route will be unaffected by the project until Monday 23 October, at which time it will use the diversion through Coningsby & Billinghay.

Resident access will be maintained throughout the project as much as safely possible. However, the direction of access may change as the project progresses, particularly during the final week of works in late October.

Cllr Davies added: “Unfortunately, like with any project this size, disruption is inevitable for those who regularly use the road. We’ll be doing everything we can to keep this to a minimum, including maintaining bus routes and resident access as often as safely possible, but people should also leave additional time for their journeys until we’re finished up on site.

“We also encourage anyone wanting to report potholes or other faults on our road network via FixMyStreet, either online or on the app.”
