Council set to ‘Level Up’ active travel in Spalding

The first phase of Spalding Active Travel improvements will start next week.

The proposed start date for the works is Monday 24 July, with the first phase expected to take up to six weeks to complete.

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: “The aim of this important ‘Levelling Up’ project is to provide safer and more reliable sustainable travel options in Spalding to make it easier for people to leave their cars at home and walk or cycle instead.

“Improving connectivity via the area’s footways and cycleways will hopefully help achieve this.

“The current existing footway/cycleway is not in great condition at all. So, as part of the scheme, we’ll be resurfacing the existing shared use path on Holbeach Road and improving connections to the Springfield Outlet area.”

This first phase of the works will include:

  • From Fulney Avenue, building a 3m wide footway/cycleway near the skatepark to the southside of Holbeach Road; adding a dropped crossing to the northside of Holbeach Road; and resurfacing the footway/cycleway on Holbeach Road up to the Camel Gate roundabout

As part of the works, the following traffic management will be in place:

  • Section one: Off-highway works adjacent to the skate park and Fulney Avenue starting on Monday 24 July
  • Section two: Once the first section is complete, temporary traffic signals while work is carried out from the dropped crossing adjacent to number 114 Holbeach Road to St. Pauls Church
  • Section three: Seven-night road closure from St Pauls Church to Camelgate roundabout starting Monday 14 August for seven evenings (7pm to 6am, including weekends). Closure will allow the footway to be safely resurfaced and tactile paving refreshed. Diversion route for this will be via the A16 / B1180 Wardentree Lane / Spalding Road / West Elloe Avenue / Holbeach Road, and vice versa

For the scheme’s second phase, the project team is exploring the possibility of building a new footway/cycleway along Coronation Bank to Springfields Outlet Shopping & Leisure. Further details about this second set of works will be shared once more information is available.

Cllr Davies added: “Like any other major scheme, there will be some level of disruption during the works. However, we’ll be doing everything we can to keep this to a minimum including carrying the works out during the school summer holidays.”

The Spalding Active Travel improvements are expected to cost £380,000, which will be funded by a portion of the £20m in ‘Levelling Up’ funding awarded to the county council in October 2021.

The remaining funding is being used across other four projects, including improvements to Spalding’s A16/A151 Springfield Roundabout and A16/B1180 Greencell Roundabout.
