The weather might be a bit mixed, but the message from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue is clear: keep your family safe this summer.
As the summer holidays approach, the fire service are reminding people of their top safety advice:
- take care around open water and always supervise children
- avoid accidentally setting wildfires by safely using and disposing of barbeques, campfires and cigarettes when outdoors
- deliberate fire setting is incredibly dangerous and irresponsible
Dan Moss, area manager for prevention and protection at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said:
“This time last year we had already started to see an increase in wildfires in fields and woodlands, which was sustained for weeks over the summer months. Although we haven’t seen quite such continued hot and dry conditions so far this year, we want to prevent fires and keep everyone as safe as possible this summer.
“Sadly, we do tend to see more deliberate incidents during the school summer holidays and we’d urge parents to know where their children and young people are, and talk to them about the dangers of deliberate fires.
“Similarly, we have seen some tragic cases across the country of people getting into difficulty in open water. We have a huge coastline in Lincolnshire, as well as rivers and lakes, and in hot weather it can be tempting to jump in. Sadly, the shock of cold water and the dangers under the surface of the water can end in disaster if the right precautions aren’t taken.
If you have a child or young person who is playing with fire or has an unhealthy fascination with fire, you can make an online referral to the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue intervention scheme.
