Maintenance and re-waterproofing of the Hemingby Road bridge will extend its useful life for decades to come
Highway bridges typically include a waterproofing layer over their deck to protect their structural integrity. Passage of vehicles, time and ingress of water and dissolved chemicals all degrade this waterproofing layer, which can lead to damage to the bridge.
Because of this, LCC is carrying out the planned preventative maintenance of replacing the waterproofing on Baumber Vale Bridge on Hemingby Road to ensure that the bridge gives years more service to come.
Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for Highways said: “During the re-waterproofing works the team will carry out a more in-depth structural examination of the bridge and will also do more preventative work to the bridge soffits, parapet fence and the vehicle barrier.
“Because of the nature of the work, we can’t leave any part of the bridge open to traffic or pedestrians. A full closure of Hemingby Road will be necessary for the duration of the works. A diversion route will be in place and access (or agreed alternative arrangements) to the adjacent properties and business in the nearby area will be arranged.
“Whilst these works are ongoing, I would like to thank everyone effected for their patience and understanding.”
Dates and times
The works are due to start on June 19 and will last for approximately five weeks although this may be extended due to unforeseen circumstances.
Traffic management
A full road closure and subsequent route diversion will be in place throughout the duration of the works.
Diversion route
Clockwise from Hemingby:
Turning right from Belchford Rd onto the A153 south to Horncastle, onto the A158 northwest towards Baumber and onto the B1225 back to the junction with Hemingby Rd.
Anticlockwise from Hemingby:
Turning left from Hemingby Rd onto the B1225 south and then the A158 southeast, both towards Horncastle. In Horncastle, take A153 north towards Louth back to the junction with Belchford Rd.
Location of works
The works will be carried out on Baumber Vale Bridge, C504 Hemingby Rd, Hemingby.
Access to buses for Hemingby village
Cllr Davies added: “The bridge closure means that Hemingby residents won’t be able to cross the bridge to catch buses in Baumber. We have worked with the Parish Council regarding bus routes in the area and are advising bus commuters from Hemingby to use LCC’s CallConnect Service to arrange transport from Hemingby. Passengers are advised to take advantage of the full 7 days of advanced booking available to maximise their chances of receiving their preferred service.”
