‘Levelling Up’ improvements to Springfield Roundabout and Greencell Roundabout will be discussed by the county council’s Highways and Transport Scrutiny Committee on Monday 22 May.
Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "With our works to improve Marsh Lane Roundabout and active travel in Boston now underway, we’re now looking at finalising plans for our next set of ‘Levelling Up’ projects along the A16 corridor between Spalding and Boston.
“The first of the two projects would be major works to the A16/A151 Springfield Roundabout starting this autumn, followed by a similar project a mile away at the A16/B1180 Greencell Roundabout.
“The aim of the two projects is to make each roundabout bigger to not only reduce congestion and improve journey time, but also create more capacity on A16 for agri-food sector delivery vehicles.
“On top of that, these changes would also future-proof the A16 so it can be widened to incorporate a dual carriageway if a suitable funding opportunity arises in the future.”
The Springfield Roundabout works, which are planned to start this autumn and would take up to a year to complete, would see the roundabout made bigger and additional approach lanes added on the A16 with extended entry lanes on its A151 approaches .
The Greencell Roundabout improvements, which are planned to start during summer 2024, would take up to nine months to complete. In addition to the roundabout being made bigger with the junction widened to provide two wider lanes within the roundabout as well as the lengthening of the two laneapproaches and exits on the A16.
Both projects would also include a complete rebuild of the roundabouts’ drainage systems, along with new surfacing, signs, lines and lighting columns installed.
Specific start dates and traffic management details would be confirmed closer to the time, but a combination of lane closures, reduced speed limits, temporary traffic signals and road closures would be used throughout both projects as needed.
Cllr Davies added: “Not only will improving the A16 corridor benefit residents by way of better walking and cycling facilities and reduced traffic congestion, but it will also open up the area for further investment opportunities.
“Investing more into improved transport infrastructure is a priority for Greater Lincolnshire, and these works will complement other local transport and renewal projects underway or planned throughout the county.
The Springfield and Greencell Roundabout improvements are expected to cost a total of £10 million.
Both projects will be funded by a portion of the £20m in ‘Levelling Up’ funding awarded to the county council in October 2021, of which a portion is also funding the ongoing Marsh Lane Roundabout improvement, Boston Active Travel and Spalding Active Travel projects.
