Give your child a head start

Fun family activities, such as chatting, playing and reading, can help boost your child’s language and literacy skills.

The Home Learning Environment campaign has a host of ideas on how to improve your child’s early language skills. Not only are they an excellent way to bond with your child and have a lot of fun, but most don’t take a lot of time, can happen anywhere and can easily be slotted into your daily routine. Visit the Start for Life online hub for more information, including where to find further support in your local area.

Cllr Mrs Patricia Bradwell OBE, executive member for children’s services, said: “We know that parent, carers and grandparents want to give their child a good start in life, but sometimes aren’t sure about the type of activities they should be doing.

“Little things like everyday conversations, make-believe play and reading together can make a big difference, boosting your child’s learning and setting them up nicely for school. Most importantly, your children will love them.”

The Home Learning Environment campaign is run by the Department for Education, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Social Care’s Office for Health Improvement and Disparities.
