Usher-ing in a new era

A woman and man on their wedding day stood on a staircase in a gallery, the Usher Gallery in Lincoln

This year, Lincoln’s Usher gallery has begun a new era as a fabulous wedding venue in the city.

The 95-year-old gallery hosted several ceremonies in 2022 and bookings for 2023 are already filling up.

Couples can hold their wedding or civil ceremony in the venue, as the large gallery space on the ground floor transforms into a stunning backdrop, with room for up to 80 guests. The use of the grand front entrance for both the couple and their guests offers an unforgettable experience.

Cllr Lindsey Cawrey, executive member for heritage and culture on Lincolnshire County Council, said: “Hosting ceremonies is a wonderful part of the gallery’s role within our community. Set within Temple Gardens in the shadow of Lincoln Cathedral, the Usher is a beautiful and unique space for anyone wanting to tie the knot.”

Cllr Sue Woolley, executive member for registration, added: “The grandeur of the Usher Gallery offers couples a beautiful backdrop for their ceremony, at an affordable rate. If you and your other half are starting to plan your wedding or civil partnership, why not talk to our team and visit the gallery to take a look around this impressive venue.”

Local businessman and philanthropist, James Ward Usher, left considerable funds to build the gallery after his death in 1921. The venue showcases a range of art and artefacts across multiple rooms, but can also be used for a range of private registration events such as weddings, baby naming ceremonies and civil partnerships.

“It is such a beautiful venue and a beautiful location”

Local couple Becky and Joe were married at the Usher Gallery in August this year. They chose to celebrate their special day here because, having seen the venue set up for a wedding, it ‘was everything we wanted’.

“It is such a beautiful venue and location,” said Becky. “It is a building that is steeped in history, the gardens are beautiful too, and the location meant that our wedding guests were able to park close by.

Our photographer was spoiled for choice when she was looking for good places to take pictures. Having our reception in the Collection Museum, next door, was also ideal. And when we compared the costs of our wedding to the cost of other popular venues in Lincoln, it proved to be great value for money.

The staff had thought about everything. We had a perfect wedding day and we were so happy we chose the Usher Gallery. We would recommend it to anyone.”
