In September, the council’s executive gave the green light to proposed changes at heritage sites across the county, including the Collection and Usher Gallery in Lincoln, Gainsborough Old Hall and Dis
The aim is to create a heritage service that is better suited to the 21st century, and one that will remain affordable in the long term.
Head of culture Will Mason said: “We’re extremely proud of our local heritage, and want to ensure it’s there for future generations to enjoy. The recent refurbishment of Lincoln Castle has really given the heritage service a shot in the arm and we want to build on that momentum.
The changes were inspired by the success of Lincoln Castle, which underwent a multi-million pound refurbishment a few years ago and as seen a surge in popularity as a result.
“Not only will these changes make the service less reliant on taxpayers’ money, they will also bring our heritage to new audiences.
“We’re confident that they will create a new-look service that has something for everyone and can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike for years to come.”

What’s planned?
The Collection Museum and Usher Gallery
There are ambitious plan to redevelop The Collection Museum to expand its exhibition space, dramatically improving the visitor experience and bringing more blockbuster exhibitions from national museums and galleries to the city and county.
The Usher Gallery Trust and Heritage Lincoln Trust, working in partnership, have been showing an interest in taking on the Usher Gallery. We expect to know more in the New Year.
Gainsborough Old Hall
Medieval manor house Gainsborough Old Hall is to be returned to its owner English Heritage in October 2020, when the current lease comes to an end. English Heritage would then be responsible for the running of the site.
