Councillors are entitled to a basic allowance, plus expenses, for council duties. They do not receive a salary.
Those who hold an office, such as chairman of a committee, may receive extra allowances.
The council decides how much councillors may receive. It does this upon advice from an independent panel. The details are set out in the members’ allowance scheme.
We publish all allowances and expenses annually.
Co-opted members
Experts, such as headteachers, police officers etc, are appointed to some committees. These ‘co-opted members’ help with consultation and decision-making.
They are entitled to receive allowances, plus expenses, for council duties.
