Request for specialist highway materials

Utility companies and contractors working on the highway may encounter areas with specialist surfaces, such as slabs, blocks, or setts. These are identified as ‘Special Surfaces’ in the National Street Gazetteer and should be considered when applying for a permit via Street Manager.

To ensure a high standard of reinstatement, we recommend:

  • Using the correct materials for reinstatement from the outset and avoiding temporary tarmac wherever possible.
  • Pre-lifting and retaining existing materials to prevent damage so they can be reused.

If reusing existing materials is not possible, we stock some replacement materials, which can be purchased through an application process. Once your application is submitted, we will:

  1. Provide a quote based on the cost and quantity of materials required.
  2. Confirm the required reinstatement specification.

Please note:

  • We do not stock all material types. Any specialist bedding materials or jointing mortar must be sourced directly from suppliers.
  • Applications must be made at least 10 working days before planned works begin. For urgent or emergency works, submit your application as soon as possible.
  • Payment must be made online by card; no other methods can be accepted.

It is essential to have the correct materials ready before starting work.
