Apple parental controls can be set up by parents and carers for their children, providing both adult and child are Apple iOS device users. To enable parental controls, first an Apple ID account needs to be created for your child so they can be added to your family group. This can be done via the parent or carer device if the child is under 13. If your child is 13 and over, they can set up an Apple ID during initial device setup or in the settings.
Once your child is added to your family group, you can begin setting up parental controls on their device.
Apple family sharing parental controls can be accessed by clicking on your device ‘settings’, then clicking on ‘family’ (underneath your name at the top of the screen) and then selecting your child’s name. You should then see your child’s family sharing page.
Within family sharing, many parental controls can be set up by clicking on the ‘screen time’ menu option. Here you will be able to:
- view a weekly report to gain an insight into your child’s screen time habits
- set content and privacy restrictions (to restrict explicit content, purchases, downloads)
- set a downtime schedule and app time limits (ensuring time away from the screen)
- manage your child’s screen time from your own device using a passcode
The first time you click on screen time, Apple will effectively walk you through setting up the various controls. You can always decide to revisit these controls via your child’s family sharing menu to set them up or make adjustments later.
Watch our YouTube video explaining how to set up these controls.
