Pornography: the effects and realities – year 6 - Stay Safe Partnership

Outcomes

This workshop will enable students to:

  • know what pornography is and where they might come across it in a digital space
  • have an understanding of the laws relating to pornography, including:
    • viewing
    • distributing
    • extreme content
  • know where to get support and who to report to if they have viewed pornography
Service Description

The effects and realities of pornography is a reactionary workshop which addresses the ongoing issue with young people being exposed to indecent content in digital spaces.

It is important to recognise that some primary children will encounter pornography online. Imagine an 11-year-old pupil who has seen something online that has made them feel ‘funny’. What would we want that pupil to know, understand and be able to do, in order to make sense of the situation?

It has been recognised that by age 11, almost a third of children have seen or been exposed to pornography in some format. In many cases, the first exposure to pornography is accidental through pop-ups, or being sent by other online users.

Students should be prepared to understand:

  • what they are seeing,
  • how this might impact their own attitudes and behaviours,
  • who to turn to for further support if what they have seen has caused distress

During the workshops, students will undertake tasks in small groups and engage in whole group discussion. Sessions will be delivered by experienced trainers from Lincolnshire Police youth engagement coordinators team in an age appropriate, fair and inclusive manner.

This workshop is available to all year 6 students (ages 10 to 11) across Lincolnshire. Each session will run for 60 minutes approximately.
