With mental health on the national curriculum for primary and secondary schools, our healthy minds programme teaches children and young people about how to stay healthy mentally as well as physically. Healthy minds can form an extension of our kids programme.
Healthy minds includes the following six modules, which allow pupils to explore the range of emotions we feel and the language we use to express them:
- self esteem
- anxiety
- bullying
- resilience
- body image
- healthy minds
The modules have been written in partnership with a fully qualified mental health first aider and a psychologist.
- Service Description
-
Children and young people have been uniquely impacted by the pandemic and lockdown, with NHS research suggesting 1 in 6 may now have a mental health problem, up from 1 in 9 in 2017.
Mini first aid has expanded its award-winning kids programme to include mental health first aid. We know from teachers and children that our award-winning kids classes are memorable and fun. So, we have taken what we do, and applied it to the most important issue for children right now: having a healthy mind.
Healthy minds includes three two-hour workshop style classes which provide children with a solid foundation for positive mental health and wellbeing.
Workshops: self esteem, anxiety, bullying, body image, resilience and healthy minds (putting skills into practice).

National curriculum
Mental health features on the school curriculum at both primary and secondary level. Many schools are looking to boost their original provision through their PSHE curriculum, to promote good mental health and to better show children how to take care of their minds as well as their bodies.
The broad statement in the national curriculum covering the huge topic of physical and mental wellbeing states that the focus in primary school should be on:
- teaching the characteristics of good physical health and mental wellbeing. Teachers should be clear that mental wellbeing is a normal part of daily life, in the same way as physical health.
- giving pupils the language and knowledge to understand the normal range of emotions that everyone experiences. This should enable pupils to articulate how they are feeling, and judge whether what they are feeling and how they are behaving is appropriate and proportionate for the situations that they experience.
Our mini first aid healthy minds course is a wonderful way to introduce these complex concepts and to start children on their path to consciously and mindfully taking care of their mental wellbeing.
