About special guardianship order
A special guardianship order (SGO) is a private law order that allows another person to become a child’s ‘special guardian’.
The SGO is for children who do not live with their birth parents.
This order enables the special guardian to make important life decisions for the child.
A support plan will be available once the order has been granted.
Support for special guardians
Being a special guardian means you might need help while you care for a child. We are here to help you and can provide support throughout your journey, including to the wider family.
You can ask for support anytime, including an assessment to explore your family needs.
Online support is available through Kinship compass, which includes:
- information online
- training
- resources
- support groups
When social workers or courts make decisions about their children's welfare, the Family rights group advises parents, grandparents, relatives and friends about their rights and options.
Subscription based organisations that provide a range of support to carers of children who have experienced trauma:
- Attachment and trauma network, Inc. - empowering trauma-informed families, schools, and communities
- National association of therapeutic parents - become part of a supportive community dedicated to empowering parents of children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences or whose children present with neurodivergent characteristics.
If your circumstances have changed, you can request a review of your SGO support plan through the special guardians' self-assessment.
