Construction of new A46 Dunholme and Welton roundabout crosses halfway mark

Welton roundabout taking shape

Works to build a new roundabout at the A46/Lincoln Road Welton junction have officially passed their midway point.

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "Our major improvements to the A46 at Welton and Dunholme have officially passed their halfway point, meaning we're less than four months away from the new roundabout officially opening.

"In total, since starting work on the scheme this summer, we've already excavated 4,400 tonnes of old road, diverted three quarters of mile of utility cables and laid 70,000 tonnes of tarmac and other materials.

"The team has also installed over a quarter mile of new drainage and a new Anglian Water main."

Work completed since July includes:

  • Constructing nearly all of the new roundabout, along with its connections to the A46 near Dunholme and Welton
  • Lowering the crest of the hill on the A46 towards Market Rasen by 2m to improve visibility
  • Removing the dangerous bend on Lincoln Road and constructing a new, straighter alignment
  • Rebuilding a half mile stretch of A46 near Dunholme and Welton
  • Working with Anglian Water to install a new water main and BT to install new cables (both are now in operation)
  • Starting work to construct a new pond and drainage ditches beside the new Lincoln Road and A46

Cllr Davies continued: "Our focus over the next few months will be on completing the new roundabout and tying it into the A46 towards Lincoln and Market Rasen, as well as removing old utility pipes and cables; laying new road surfacing and white lines; and installing new drainage connections, signage and street lights.

"We'll also be carrying out some ecological works like planting 300 new trees, putting in nearly half a mile of new hedges, and creating a new wetland area.

"We're also going to be laying new road surfacing to another section of the A46 near Welton/Dunholme early next year, which will involve some overnight road closures. Once the dates and details are confirmed, we will share more information.

"Once we're finished next spring, the changes we're making to this junction will not only improve safety at this accident hotspot, but also reduce congestion for those travelling around the area."

The A46 Dunholme and Welton Roundabout project is being part-funded using the £2m allocated to the authority by the Department of Transport (DfT) from tranche 2 of its National Productivity Investment Fund. The remaining funding is coming from a combination of third party contributions and the county council.
